Impregnable Ronda

History, Heritage and Customs

“Better fortified than ever, you are now the best jewel in my kingdom, oh, Ronda!” Writers and poets related it, “It can never be defeated,” “It will never fall into the hands of the unfaithful.” Or so believed Alhaquim, the last constable of Ronda during the Muslim period…
Find out how the most inaccessible city could be conquered despite its fortification and the geographical location it benefited from.
Take a walk through History, discovering the transformation of a city that became a milestone in the history of Spain.

This tour is designed with the aim of uncovering practically the whole of the oldest historical centre in Ronda. Without a doubt, everything is essential. It will lead you along the main monuments of the city, but also around areas that are not so well-known, protected by its uniqueness, transporting us to older times.

We will visit the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) and the most characteristic viewpoints. We will talk about the landscape that surrounds this area, its flora, fauna and distinctive geography.
We will enter the city, winding through its irregular streets inherited from our Muslim ancestors. We will discover countless monuments such as the House of the Moorish King, the Marqués de Salvatierra Palace, the Arch of Felipe V and the Arab Baths (which I recommend visiting for its uniqueness). At this point begins our journey towards the city walls, where we will understand why it was considered impregnable and how the contest to achieve the conquest of this coveted square was carried out.
The walls of Ronda are of great singularity and have been restored a few years ago. They are in a very good state of conservation and are an idyllic setting to contemplate the city landscape from a less traditional yet no less beautiful viewpoint.

Our itinerary will then take us to Duquesa de Parcent Square, to find a myriad of places that will take us back to ancient times. Here, the church of Santa María de la Encarnación -also called Santa María la Mayor- and the Town Hall stand out.
Getting back, some other squares and monumental buildings await – such as the Giant’s Square or María Auxiliadora Square.

This visit lasts around 2.5 hours and does not include the tickets to monuments.
It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and, especially during the summer months, sunscreen and hat.
It is medium intensity; the characteristic orography of Ronda has streets with great unevenness.

Sacred Ronda

History, Heritage, Art and Tradition

Since the conquest of the Catholic Kings, Isabel and Fernando, Ronda converted to Catholicism and thus, throughout the centuries, great buildings dedicated to religion arose showing us the greatness of the city, and still today they survive among the hustle and bustle of modern life. Each temple is unique and in them we can appreciate the singular beauty of each artistic-historical period, as well as the events that surrounded its construction, commemoration and conservation.

Our visit begins in the church of La Merced, and goes along Virgen de la Paz Street, where we will be able to stroll through the 18th century history of Ronda, spotting, among other things, the Bullring.
We will continue along Carrera Espinel until Socorro Square and the church of the same name. Afterwards, the Carmen Abela Square will take us to the Templete de María de los Dolores, an open chapel that is indispensable for the visit. Santa Cecilia Street, with a very steep gradient, will take us to the church of Padre Jesús, the Eight Streams Fountain, Puente Viejo (the Old Bridge), the Arab Baths (visit that I recommend), the Arch of Felipe V, and the Marqués de Salvatierra Palace. Along the street of the same name, we will discover the Minaret of San Sebastian, until we reach Duquesa de Parcent Square, heart of the city and a mandatory stop.
Here, you may find the current Town Hall, the church of Santa María de la Encarnación or La Mayor and the convents of La Caridad and Santa Isabel de los Ángeles. We will continue the visit to the church of La Paz and continue until we finish at Plaza de España (Spain Square), after crossing Puente Nuevo.

This is a circular route through the Barrio del Mercadillo, Alto and Bajo and the Barrio de la Ciudad.
It lasts approximately two and a half hours.
Please note that, due to the orography of the streets of Ronda, this is a visit of medium difficulty, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes.
